Raiders Roll Over Holy Innocents' 47-28

The Varsity Football team got the Labor Day weekend off to a great start with an impressive victory over the visiting Holy Innocents' Golden Bears on Friday, September 1, 2017.

The Raiders won the 10th Annual Battle of Raider Drive 47-28, extending their winning streak in the neighborhood rivalry to six.

Game notes:

Scoring in the 10th Annual Battle of Raider began at the 7:51 mark of the 1st Quarter. Junior Trey Young capped off a nice drive with a 20 yard TD run. A successful PAT put the Raiders up 7-0.
The Golden Bears came storming back, successfully executing their Triple Option attack to tie the game, 7-7.
On the ensuing drive, the Raider rushing attack took over. In a 10-play scoring drive, Junior Reese White ripped off runs of 20, 10, and 17 yards; Young chipped in with 24 yards on the ground. With 5:45 left in the 2nd quarter, White's 4-yard TD run put the Raiders back on top 14-7.
The Bears tied it up with another sustained drive.
With the first half winding down, the Raiders regained possession. Junior quarterback Aaron Graham rolled out to pass and decided to tuck the ball and run. Following Graham's 40 yard scramble, White then ran 22 yards into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night. With 57.6 seconds left in the half, the Raiders kicked the extra point to take a 21-14 lead.
With less than a minute remaining in the half, the Raiders kicked off and Junior Chris Clay made an outstanding open field tackle to force the Golden Bears to start from their own 16 yard line. Holy Innocents' ran out the clock to conclude the first half with the Raiders leading 21-14.
To begin the second half, Clay was at it again as he made another tremendous open field tackle to pin the Bears back on their own 11 yard line.
At 7:23 in the third quarter, Holy Innocents' cashed in on another lengthy drive with a 9 yard TD to tie the game, 21-21.
The Raiders responded with a nearly five-minute drive highlighted by big runs from White and Young. The clock-eating push featured dominating blocking by the offensive line: Seniors Justin Miller and Jabari Keys, and Juniors Hayden Rubin, Connor Flynn, and LaRon Valentine. With 2:33 left in the third quarter, White scampered for 4 yards into the Golden Bears' endzone. With Junior Eddie Cardenas kicking the successful PAT, the Raiders regained the lead, 28-21.
Now in the final quarter, Holy Innocents' put together a 10-play drive and tied the game at 28 with 10:17 on the clock.
The deadlock did not last long. Even though the Raiders found themselves backed up to their own 12, after a 9 yard run by Young, White exploded for a 79 yard TD run, his fourth touchdown of the game. Sophomore Matheus Araujo's PAT with 8:39 remaining in the game put the Raiders up for good, 35-28.
In their following possession, the Golden Bears started from their own 28 yard line. In the second play of the possession, Sophomore defensive end Kyle Kennard recovered a fumble to give the Raiders the ball on the Holy Innocents' 14 yard line. Two plays later, Young ran 8 yards to put the Raiders up 41-28 (missed PAT).
The Golden Bears still had some fight remaining. On their next possession, their quarterback completed a long pass; however, the Raider defense stood strong and Holy Innocents' could not score.
With only 4:21 on the clock, Junior Kyle Fletcher turned on the jets and outran the entire Golden Bear defense for a thrilling 62 yard touchdown, finishing the scoring for the evening. The Golden Bear offense was moving down the field in the final seconds and, as a final exclamation point to the victory, sophomore Austin Simmons intercepted a pass to end their drive and clinch the sixth consecutive Battle of Raider Drive for the Raiders.

The Raiders appreciate the strong support from the student section and look forward to their next home game Friday, September 8th. The Woodward Eagles visit Hoskyn Stadium for Armed Services Night. Kick off is 7:30pm.
