Competition Cheer 1st at APS Championships

Competition Cheer 1st at APS Championships

The Varsity Competition Cheer team competed at the Atlanta Public Schools (APS) 2016 High School Cheerleading Championships at North Atlanta High School, Saturday, October 29th.

In the two weeks leading up to the APS event, the Raiders team finished 4th at the Peachtree Ridge Invitational and 2nd at the Kennesaw Mountain Cheer Classic. The goal for Saturday was to bring home a win.

During warm ups there were a few mistakes and nerves, and emotions were running high. When it was time to take the floor; however, the team came out and performed their best routine yet.

All three main flyers, Adrianna Barry, Becky Greenberg and Marley Seymour, nailed the first stunt which incorporated a skill that is brand new to all three ladies this season. Each flyers' base played an integral part in making these stunts hit. The team went on to hit all stunts, including the pyramid. Vanessa Cooper, a freshman, brought home running tumbling with a beautiful Round Off Back Hand Spring Full pass.

The girls sparkled throughout the routine, with huge smiles and an air of confidence that was lacking in previous performances. At the end of the performance, the team celebrated with hugs and tears of joy. No matter the outcome of the score, the team was finally where they wanted to be.

In the Raiders' division, Carver placed 3rd, Griffin placed 2nd, and the Raiders claimed their first Varsity Competition Cheer Championship. Congratulations to the AAAAA Division Champs of the APS 2016 High School Cheerleading Championships!

Head Coach Elie Janowiak is extremely proud and excited for the team. "These girls have worked tirelessly with many two-a-day practices starting as early as 6:15am. We have overcome squad changes, injuries, and choreography changes. I could not be more proud of this team and their performance on Saturday. We are excited to head to Regions this week at the University of West Georgia."

The final event of the year is the Region Championship on Saturday, November 5 at the University of West Georgia. The Raiders take the floor at noon.
