Congratulations to Senior Rachel Drakeford (Class of 2019) for signing a letter of commitment to cheer at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (Florida A&M/FAMU) in Tallahassee. Drakeford received an academic scholarship to cheer for the Rattlers, who compete in the NCAA Division I Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
"The entire Riverwood Cheer coaching staff is so proud of Rachel for continuing to pursue cheerleading at FAMU," notes Head Cheerleading Coach, Amanda Weaver. "Not only is Rachel an incredible athlete, but she is a kind friend, an encouraging teammate, and a dedicated student. Rachel has contributed so much to the cheerleading teams here at Riverwood, and I look forward to seeing her flourish both as a cheerleader and a young woman at FAMU. She will be missed!"
Drakeford was a Varsity football and basketball cheerleader for three years. She received the Coaches' Award for football cheer and was named a National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) All-American in both 2018 and 2019. When not cheering for her Raiders, Drakeford, an IB Diploma student, served as Senior Class Secretary. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club, and the Spanish National Honor Society. Outside of school, Drakeford's community activities included serving as a Cascade Youth Usher and participating in Christian Rites of Passage. During her senior year, she coached younger, aspiring cheerleaders on the Junior Raiders cheer squad.
Drakeford's two older brothers were also Raider athletes and also continued their athletic careers in college. Brother Henry played tennis at Hampton University, and Grant (Class of 2014) played football at The Citadel. Her parents, Rosalind and Henry "Buddy" Drakeford, met as students at Florida A&M.
