Boys Golf Earns State Berth at Area Tournament
The Boys Golf team finished second in the Area 4-AAAAA Tournament on Monday, April 30, 2018. Held at the Oak Mountain Golf Club in Carrollton on a beautiful spring day, the Raiders had their season best score of 335.
The combined score and finish position qualifies the team for the 2018 Class AAAAA State Tournament at Planterra Ridge in Peachtree City on May 21 and 22. In recent years, a few individual Raiders advanced to the State Tournament; however, this is the first time since 2009 for the Raiders to advance as a team.
Sophomore Phillip Clendenin led the team with a 79, finishing fifth overall in the tournament. Sophomore Casey Scheele followed with a career best 82, highlighted by an Eagle 3 on the par 5 3rd hole. Freshman Jonah Hirsch and Junior Connor Sewell finished out the four counted scores each with 87. Also playing were Sophomore Jacob Smith and Senior Eddie Cooper. Smith suffered an unfortunate disqualification due to a technical infraction on the 6th hole and Cooper carded a 97 after a difficult start.
Clendenin, Scheele, Hirsch, and Sewell finished strong when it was really needed. As a group, they played the last two holes in a combined even par to secure the sub-340 round needed for the state tournament.
These same six will play in the state tournament.
