The Boys Golf team had an outstanding day at the Area 6-AAAAA Tournament Monday, April 29, 2019. This year's tournament was at the Dogwood Golf Club in Austell and the Raiders brought home both the individual area championship trophy and the team area runner up trophy. Additionally, the Raiders earned their second consecutive trip to the Class AAAAA State Tournament.
Congratulations to Phillip Clendenin for shooting even par 71 and winning the Area 6-AAAAA Champion trophy. The other coaches commented on how well he played around the green – chipping and putting. Clendenin hit very few drivers, getting the ball in play in the fairway on virtually every hole, which led to a round of mostly pars and no major mishaps anywhere.
Overall, the team finished second with a score of 309 (an average of 77 from the four best scores). Fortunately each of the six golfers had solid rounds -- any of the four scores paired with Clendenin's 71 would break 340, the state-qualifying number. The Raiders finished only seven strokes behind first place Carrollton and were 30 strokes ahead of third place Kell.
Jonah Hirsch shot 75 and finished 5th overall with a score of 36 on the back nine. He played without mishaps, a few birdies, and played consistently.
Connor Sewell finished 11th with a 78. After a mediocre start (7-over through 6 holes) he closed the front nine with two birdies and a par to shoot 41; he continued efficiently on the back nine to shoot 37.
Casey Scheele was the fourth counted score at 85. His 39 on the front nine gave everybody confidence that the team was going to have a great day. Being only 12-over as a team after nine holes gave the Raiders 44 strokes to play with on the back.
Next up is the State Class AAAAA Tournament in Carrollton at Sunset Hills on May 20 and 21, 2019
