Varsity Boys Lacrosse traveled to Sprayberry for a non-area contest on Thursday, March 28, 2019. Although the Raiders were in a commanding lead for most of the game, a pair of key penalties turned the contest into a meltdown.
Near the end of the first half, Senior Nate Arney was flagged for a stick violation that resulted in a three minute, non-releasable penalty. Sprayberry easily capitalized on the player adavantage, and pulled closer to what was then a five point deficit.
The momentum continued into the second half, which was plagued with penalties. The Raiders were at a one or more player disadvantage for nearly the entire second half, and a late penalty on Sam Sullivan allowed Sprayberry to tie the game with 48 seconds remaining. The abundance of penalties had everyone anxious and tempers flared.
Senior Kavan Husney had an incredible faceoff to start overtime and took the ball deep into Yellow Jackets territory. He threw a few false pumps with his long pole, and then abruptly fired the winning goal about 20 seconds into overtime. It was a hard-fought victory for a team that has struggled to put away their opponents in years past.
Following Spring Break, the Raiders return to action with another non-area contest when they host neighborhood rivals Holy Innocents' Tuesday, April 9.
