Wrestlers 7th at Wolverine Classic

Wrestlers 7th at Wolverine Classic
The Wrestling team traveled to Woodstock for the two-day 2017 Wolverine Classic Tournament. The annual event draws the best wrestlers from the state of Georgia, and is the toughest all-around competition the Raiders will see until they reach the State Tournament in February. The Raiders arrived Friday afternoon with ten wrestlers ready to compete in the 24 team tournament:
126 - Ronan Quigley
132 - Alex Gruenig
138 - AJ Harris
145 - Jacob Harris
152 - Cole Fitzgerald
160 - Bashiri Bobo (3rd place)
170 - Daba Fofana
182 - Ronald Humphrey (2nd place)
195 - Nicolo Salvatori (6th place)
285 - Matheus Araujo
Friday afternoon got off to a great start with the Raiders going 9-1 in the first round. As a result, the Raiders were in high spirits as the tournament moved to round two later that night. Unfortunately, of the nine winning wrestlers in Round 1, only Bashiri Bobo and Ronald Humphrey won in the second round to reach the championship bracket. Fortunately, the double-elimination format ensured that every Raider was still alive to compete again on Saturday.
Saturday's consolation matches began early, and the Raiders collected wins from Ronan Quigley, AJ Harris, Daba Fofana, and Nicolo Salvatori. Next were Bashiri Bobo and Ronald Humphrey in the semi-finals. Humphrey's pin propelled him to the finals; however, Bobo lost a tough match to Lovett and dropped into the consolation bracket. After two more consolation rounds, the Championship Matches approached with the Raiders in 10th place overall, holding a one-point edge over Kell. With Nicolo Salvatori wrestling for 5th place, Bashiri Bobo wrestling for 3rd, and Ronald Humphrey going for 1st, the Raiders had three great opportunities to gain some ground. Salvatori finished 6th; Bobo won 3rd; Humphrey finished 2nd. These added points were enough to jump two places for a 7th place team finish overall. It was a successful day and a huge improvement over previous year's results. Congratulations to all of the wrestlers and the coaching staff (Coach Zach McKeone, Coach Brooks Brodie, and Coach Andrew King) for their hard work.
Next up is a Quad-Meet with Marist, McNair, and Westminster on Wednesday, December 6 at Marist. After that, the Raiders travel to South Forsyth for the annual Santa Slam December 8-9.
