3rd Year in a Row: Raiders Area 6-AAAAA Champs

3rd Year in a Row: Raiders Area 6-AAAAA Champs

Congratulations to the Wrestling team for winning the Area 6-AAAAA Traditional Championship for the third year in a row. As in both 2017 and 2018, the Raiders captured the title at home, with the Decatur Bulldogs again finishing second. The 2019 victory came with a run of Finals pins in every weight class from 132-170, and with 12 wrestlers qualifying for the Sectional Tournament next week at Union Grove.

Now that State Duals are complete, the Wrestling team moves into the last leg of the season. The Traditional Tournament, designed around individual wrestlers, determines the best wrestler in the State of Georgia at each weight class. Each team earns points depending on where each wrestler places. The Saturday's 2019 Area Traditional Team Scores were as follows:

Riverwood 146
Decatur 112
Lithia Springs   65
North Springs   49
Banneker   32
Grady   17

Assistant Coach Mike McQuary remarked, "Losing Area Duals to Decatur last month really stung, and I wasn't sure how we would match up with them at the Area Traditional. But sometimes we get myopic on focusing on all the things that are not going well with our team - like academic issues and injuries - and we forget that other teams deal with the same sorts of things. Our kids really stepped up today and it feels like we are heading into the State qualifier next week with a lot of momentum. I'm also excited for the first ever Georgia Girls State Tournament which kicks off with their Qualifier next week, too. We should be well represented with Seniors Kelly Jimenez (106) and Daily Leepson (116), and Freshman Diana Jimenez (126)."

The Sectional Tournament begins at 5pm on Friday, February 8 and continues at 9am Saturday morning, February 9:
