A group of exciting newcomers and several much-improved veterans gave the Girls Cross Country team a great start to the 2018 campaign. On a cool, overcast day, Holy Innocents' hosted the Lady Raiders at the Fifth Annual Battle of Sandy Springs on Saturday, August 18, 2018. The two-mile race acts as a time trial for the runners and, more importantly, as a barometer to forecast the season.
Long-time Head Coach Isaac Seals was pleased. "Our girls ran well, led by Sophomore Elle Mezzio, who set a new PR. Kylie Rincon ran a gutty race, out-kicking a couple of Holy Innocents' runners; I like that competitiveness. I also like the spirit of this team which is pulling for each other."
Senior Captain Celine Al-Noubani and Sophomore Allison Leffler also had new time trial PRs. Freshman Nina Ouellette was another very pleasant surprise with four other freshmen coming in under the Varsity cut-off time: Lily Hodges, Macy Medlin-Hall, Olivia Pryor, and Blake Solomon. Sophomores Renee Al-Noubani, Murphy Barja, and Tori Williams, along with Senior Martha Ross, also finished under the Varsity cut-off.
Coach Seals added "One of my biggest concerns is keeping our runners healthy because several of our top runners are currently also playing club soccer this fall. I feel like we have a State Top 10 team now, and I'm looking forward to seeing how our team does on a real three-mile XC course."
The next outing for the Lady Raiders is Saturday morning, August 25th at the North Georgia Championship. The course is at Lamar Murphy Park in Jefferson.
