The Girls and Boys Cross-Country teams traveled to the ESPN/Disney complex in Orlando, Florida to compete in the Disney Cross-Country Challenge on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Not only did the runners experience a high level competition and a State Meet atmosphere, but they spent some of the fall break weekend enjoying all that Disney has to offer. While the 3.1 mile course was relatively flat, the terrain was soft grass and sand, and the weather hot and humid, making for a tough run that will prepare the runners for the Region meet next month.
Against a deep and talented field comprised of runners from some of the top cross-country programs in Florida, Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia, Freshman Elizabeth Graves finished 20th (20:32) in the girls meet and Junior Owen McDaniel was 50th (18:18) in the boys meet. Senior Co-Captains Meg Oberholtzer and Rachel Gill, along with Sophomores Anna Walker and Lainey Young and Juniors Maggie Duncan and Maddie Keith gave strong performances, as the Lady Raiders finished 19th out of 34 teams. The boys' team did not score as a team, as only three runners competed; in addition to McDaniel, Juniors Alec Nathan and Mark Shutley ran well for the Raiders.
Both the Boys and the Girls teams are running time trials at the Region course in Canton on Saturday, October 19th before having an opportunity to run at the Carrollton Last Chance meet on October 26th (the site of the upcoming state championships in November).
