Boys XC at Coach Wood Invitational

On Saturday, October 15, the Boys Cross Country team traveled to Gainesville for the 2016 Nike Fleet Feet/Coach Wood Cross Country Invitational.

Senior Jeffrey Edge was the first Raider to conquer the wooded, hilly course. He crossed the finish line 51st overall (18:16). Coming in next were Junior Andrew Ungashick (18:27/58th), Junior Luis Zambrano (18:58/95th), Junior Nasir Muhammad (19:10/112th), and Sophomore Justin Coleman (19:12/113th).

Head Coach Zach McKeone was very proud of the team's effort, "We ran amazing today, and it's the first time this season that we have run as a team. We had a pack of guys in that Varsity race that ran together and pushed each other all the way to the finish. Our numbers 3 through 11 runners all finished within 30 seconds of each other -- that shows how much depth we have on this team. I am really looking forward to the Region meet on October 27th. I expect us to qualify for State for the first time in five years and to have a great team showing."

Sportsmanship note: In the final quarter mile of the JV boys race, Raider Sophomore Dan Devlin went out of his way to slow down and veer over to encourage a struggling Wheeler runner. The runner, having been lapped, was several miles behind the field. Dan still finished 19th overall in the race, but definitely placed first in sportsmanship. Lady Raider runner Madison McQuary, who witnessed the maneuver said, "that may be the nicest thing I've ever seen in a cross country race."
