The Boys Cross Country team qualified for the State Meet for the first time in five years with a second place finish in the Region 6-AAAAA Championship. The 2016 Region meet took place Thursday afternoon, October 27, at the Boundary Waters Park in Douglasville.
Senior Jeffrey Edge (17:24) led the Raider charge with a fifth place overall finish. Placing after Edge were Junior Andrew Ungashick (11th/17:41), Sophomore Erick Ramirez (13th/17:50), Junior Ace Muhammad (16th/18:01), Sophomore Justin Coleman (20th/18:27), Junior Luis Zambrano (21st/18:31), and Freshman Harry Mehre (22nd/18:35).
The JV Boys continued to show off the Raiders' team depth by winning the JV Regional Championship in convincing fashion. Congratulations to JV Champion Alex Gruenig (18:29). Following Gruenig were Dan Devlin (2nd/18:39), Rafa Kennett (3rd/18:43), Mick McQuary (6th/18:54), and Pedro Diaz (9th/19:11).
Head Coach Zach McKeone was thrilled, "It's been a long time since we've been to state, and the guys ran great today. When you have our depth and one runner has on off day, someone else just steps up. I think we can surprise some teams next weekend and have top ten state potential."
The GHSA 2016 State Cross Country Championships are Saturday, November 5, at Carrollton High School. The Boys Class AAAAA competition is at 12:30pm.
