Raiders Edge Spartans on the Road

The Varsity Boys Basketball team got back in the win column with a very exciting 44-43 win at North Springs on Tuesday, December 5. The Battle of Sandy Springs lived up to its billing as both teams seem to always find another gear for this neighborhood rivalry. Adding to the heightened atmosphere, the student sections were loud and had a battle of their own in cheering for their respective teams.

Leading 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Raiders then went cold and trailed 21-17 at halftime. With a much better shooting performance in the third period, the Raiders worked their way back to within one point, trailing 35-34 as they started their final push. With only one minute remaining, the game was tied 41-41. The Spartans went ahead 42-41 at the 47 second mark and held on for an agonizing 30 seconds. With less than ten seconds on the clock, the Spartans fouled Junior Jalen Edwards as he hit a two-pointer. Edwards nailed the subsequent free-throw to put the Raiders up 44-43. The Spartans drove down the court for one last time; however, the Raider defense blocked the layup to secure the Region 6-AAAAA victory. It should be a terrific rematch when North Springs travels to the Raider Tournament Gym Friday, January 19, 2018.

Raider highlights: Junior Jalen Edwards, Senior Nasir Muhammad, and Sophomre Nathan Henderson scored 10 points each. Henderson's 12 rebounds gave him his first double-double of his high school career. Senior Julian Walker provided critical lock-down defense on North Springs' best player to limit his effectiveness.

The Raiders end their three game road trip with a home game Friday, December 8. The region match vs. Grady tips at 7:30pm
