The Varsity Boys Basketball team traveled to North Atlanta on the final weekday of Winter Break to play a non-region game rescheduled from December. The Friday afternoon, January 5 non-region contest seemed like an early "Senior Night," as the Raider starting seniors dominated the court. In fact, seniors Rudy Fitzgibbons, Christian Sutton, and Nazir (Ace) Muhammad combined for 53 of the 63 points in the 63-59 victory.
From the opening jump, the Raiders never trailed. In the first period, Fitzgibbons and Muhammad scored at will, the team played inspired defense, and the Raiders raced out to claim a 20-12 lead. The second quarter; however, was just the opposite. Lapses in defense allowed the Warriors to regroup and close the score to 30-25. The scoreboard reflected that same on-again/off-again defense throughout the game. Ultimately, the Warriors shrank the lead to only three points. In response, the seniors buckled down to regain control late in the fourth quarter. Fitzgibbons made timely free throws in the final period and finished with 23 points; Sutton sank a critical three-pointer at the end to tally 19 on the day; Muhammad slammed home a dunk for his 11th point to preserve the win.
The next game is a region matchup vs. Grady at home Saturday afternoon, January 6. Tip off is 5:30pm.
