On Tuesday, November 14, the Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team started the 2017 campaign by hosting Holy Innocents' in a much-anticipated neighborhood rivaly.
In the first quarter, the Raiders held the Golden Bears scoreless and built an 11-0 lead. Finally, the Golden Bears scored against the Raiders tenacious defense at the opening of the second period. As the game advanced, things got more intense. A combination of Raider turnovers and a tightened Golden Bear defense erased the lopsided score. At the end of the third, the Raiders found themselves with only a two point edge, 30-28. The final quarter started with continued energy, evenly matched defense and scoring. Mid-way through the period, Holy Innocents' grabbed the lead for the first time and built a five point margin. At this point, a critical Raider timeout put the team back in control. Then, with only 1:50 remaining, the Raiders tied the game, 41-41. At this point, the Raiders drew another foul and went right back to the free throw line to build a 43-41 lead. Milking the clock to 28 seconds, the Raiders drew a foul while scoring. Although the free throw missed, the Raiders claimed a 45-41 victory to kick off the 2017-18 season.
The JV team plays next on Saturday, November 18 at Decatur. Tip off is 1:30pm.
